TRADITIONAL RANCHES: Ranches within our organization, like Corona, that are run traditionally are basically areas where the State of Colorado's traditional season structure is in effect. On these ranches we normally run 3, 5-day hunts with bow and/or muzzle loader starting the first weekend of September. RIFLE SEASONS
** For all of these hunts, you the hunter, are tied directly to the type of license issued to you.
RANCHING FOR WILDLIFE RANCHES: The ranches within our organization (ranches like Slater and Elkhead) that are run under the Ranching For Wildlife Program (RFW) and are not subject to many of the traditional restrictions that are mandatory on other ranches state wide. The RFW Program is a cooperative agreement between the State of Colorado and a limited number of premier ranches within the state. For certain concessions that we make to the state, we as private land owners are allowed a much greater say in the management of the game herds within our borders. In conjunction to having a greater say in the management we also receive certain other benefits such as (1) the ability to set our own season dates, (2) the ability to choose any legal means of harvest and (3) guaranteed licenses. (1) The ability to set our own season dates. This means that we can pretty much tailor the dates of a hunt to fit a groups needs. It allows us to spread the dates out, therefore reducing hunting pressure and makes it possible to have much smaller groups booked over a longer time frame.
This simply allows you to choose your weapon. You can literally hunt with a bow one second and a rifle, pistol or muzzle loader the next and be perfectly legal. This feature together with the ability to set our dates allows a hunter to hunt in mid September with a rifle, or early November with a bow. It is your choice.
(3) Guaranteed Licenses. All licenses are issued directly to the ranch. These licenses are purchased by the hunter from our distributor prior to hunting, without the hassle of applying or drawing. We basically stop by the store and with proper identification and a copy of your hunter safety card, you may then buy a license. Anyone born after 1948 is required to have a hunter safety card. If you have booked an Elk/Mule Deer/Antelope Combination Hunt, then you will need to buy all 3 licenses at one time, and regardless of when your hunt is booked, the licenses are guaranteed. As you can see, there is a large management difference between a traditional ranch and one of our ranches in the RFW Program. Is one better than the other? No, not necessarily. The RFW Program does give you a lot more flexibility than the traditional system, however it is important for you to understand that regardless of what fits your needs, our harvest percentage for rifle elk hunts is 94.8% overall. This percentage includes RFW and Traditional hunters. Regardless of which ranch or which system you hunt, you are going to see a lot of games and have a great opportunity to harvest a bull elk. The biggest difference in my opinion between the two systems is, the size of groups. As state above, the RFW Program gives us the ability to spread the time frame out on our hunts. On the traditional ranches, we must hunt set dates therefore if we wish to harvest blank number of animals from a ranch then we are tied to that number of hunters for that date. If we feel that we can safely and securely harvest blank number of bulls, then we strive to only put blank number of hunters there and at no time will we jeopardize this strategy. We are very committed to wildlife management and quality of hunts, so we will not over hunt any ranch. You have my personal guarantee that no matter which system you choose, SRO will give you 110% to assure that you receive a successful, private, first class, fair chase enjoyable hunt experience. |
